Career / Professional Highlights

Dr Dan Johnstone is a Grants Development Specialist at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), where he supports researchers to develop competitive grant applications across a wide range of schemes. His work spans tailored one to one mentoring through to the design and delivery of large-scale grant development initiatives, providing strategic guidance on positioning, framing and submission readiness.
Prior to this role, Dan spent over a decade as a teaching and research academic at the University of Sydney, where he convened and delivered courses in physiology and neuroscience and supervised students from Honours through to PhD. As an active researcher, he has secured multiple competitive grants and led a successful research program in neurodegeneration and neuroprotection.
Dan also brings extensive insight into the funding landscape through service on national committees, including the Research Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC), and as Chair of grant review panels, providing first-hand experience of funding priorities and assessment processes.
